Meet the UAY Team

me close in b&w Everjoyce Christina Zhuwaneti-King – Founding Member, Trustee.

Everjoyce is a Public Speaker, Property and Business Coach and a Landlord. She is passionate about leadership issues in Africa, Philanthropy, Real Estate and Personal Development. She is a founding member of UAY and is herself an AIDS orphan, having lost her father to the disease. One of the trustees once said that Everjoyce lives, eats, breathes UAY.

This is what Joy herself says: “It is true that I am very passionate about what UAY stands for – Empowerment for our youth in Africa. I believe that an educated, inspired and empowered youth really makes a bright future a powerful possibility for Africa. I am especially concerned to engage young people in Africa as I know that they are the leaders of tomorrow, leading us through the challenges of today. HIV/AIDS is one such enormous challenge. We have seen its effects devastating communities and nations. Children have been major casualties and the thought of their suffering just breaks my heart. I have these children in my own family. The children in my family have been lucky because they have us, and we have been able to provide for them generously. However, they are millions of children who are not so lucky. UAY is about those children; children who have no affluent ‘aunty Joy’s’ living in the West to help them;
There are children who have aged grandparents who can barely look after themselves, let alone their young orphaned grandchildren;
There are children who have to be looked after by aunts and uncles who themselves are struggling to look after their own children, let alone those of their late relatives;
There are children who do not even have aunts, uncles, grandparents they can call on.
Their plight is the worst of all for it robs them of their childhood. They have become full time carers of sick parents and young brothers and sisters instead.

Burden croppedBurden Mavunga – Chairman and Trustee

Burden, a founder member and UAY trustee was born in Zimbabwe in 1974. He went to Chishawasha Primary School from 1981 till 1987.This is where his link with the charity is. After finishing school, he pursued a Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management. He is based in the UK and is currently studying for BA in Hospitality and Catering.

Burden has been passionate about charity work ever since he was in Zimbabwe. With a group of friends, he used to go to a local children’s home to cook for the cildren, and help them keep the home clean. When the old students from the Chishawasha Valley decided to start up a charitable organisation, Burden jumped at the opportunity to be a part of them, seeing it as his way of doing something for the community he left back in Zimbabwe.

Burden is a sports enthusiast. He plays Rugby and Basketball and has a passion for chess. He likes reading history and in particular, biblical history. He is married to Rufaro and they have two daughters.
